Just last week, gay marriages were held in Iowa by edict of that state's supreme court. A few days later the New Hampshire state Senate passed a gay marriage bill by one vote. And Vermont legalized gay marriage a few weeks ago. Now comes the District of Columbia .
And while we've watched as liberal judges demanded that marriage be redefined, and we've seen liberal politicians use slim majorities to change the definition of the oldest, most fundamental institution in the world, we haven't seen a demand for this radical transformation of marriage by the American people. Quite the opposite. In fact, in the over thirty states where the legal definition of marriage has been on the ballot in recent years, voters in each state have agreed that it should be exclusively defined as the union of one man and one woman.
Yet liberals persist. Now they're beginning to plot efforts to overturn the 1996 Federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), which defines marriage under federal law as the union of one man and one woman, and protects other states from being forced to recognize the gay marriages of other states. Given that the vote of the DC Council is still subject to congressional review, (since Congress has jurisdiction over the District of Columbia), it could potentially serve as a preview of any efforts to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act.
One of the key points that seems to be lost in a debate that gets overwhelmed with rhetoric about "rights" is the rights of religious Americans, businesses and institutions to avoid being forced to compromise their faith - to say nothing of the fact that if "gay" marriage should be a "right", why not polygamous marriage? What's at the bottom of the slippery slope?
Fundamental societal institutions are not the place for liberal social engineering games. Unfortunately, we can now add the DC City Council to the growing list of government institutions that are out of touch.
The American people must stand up and say "No More"!
