New Math, Federal Debt, and Pink Nail Polish
Whether we like it or not, mathematics is life. Ever had a cake with too much sugar? Ever get incorrect change back from a cashier. Someone screwed up the math! Ever see a crooked building? It’s why carpenters say measure twice, cut once. Proficiency in math is proficiency in life. Ever stopped to wonder that if the earth’s atmosphere were not precisely 78% oxygen, 21% nitrogen and 1% other gases you probably wouldn’t be reading this. At least not sitting up anyway. So you humanities graduates have finally got to admit it, math is life.
If you’re as old as President Obama you probably remember what was called the “new math”, which was adopted by many American public schools during the 1960’s. I’m not exactly sure why it happened but I consider myself a survivor of the “new math”. Along about eighth grade I remember sitting in math class and staring at the blackboard in silent seizures of violent panic. I felt as though I was looking at Chinese. Up until then I’d been categorized as a high academic achiever, yet I just could not grasp these concepts. None of it made sense to me. However to be fair I’ll assign 25 percent of my sudden math-lapse to my lack of comprehension.
I’ll also accept another 25 percent of the blame even though it was mostly due to the class seating arrangement. The primary problem was directly to my left in the person of Amanda Q., whose nascent womanhood was in full blossom in every conceivable way. Though that was not her “real” name as you might imagine I had very “real” feelings for her. Unfortunately, I had not yet mastered the ability to capably function around such pulchritude; and since I sometimes wonder if I’ve completely mastered it yet, I humbly concede I’m guilty now. I was guilty then.
But that’s all the blame I’m taking. I won’t blame my parents because they were as dumbfounded as I was. They’d been taught mathematics that hadn’t been made “more relevant” after the government overreacted to the Soviet launch of Sputnik. i won’t blame the teacher because he was just following their lead. He was actually a terrific guy who desperately wanted to help me. But to my horror and everyone’s astonishment, I failed. I would be required to spend six weeks that summer studying what I hated most.
The only thing I remember about those six weeks was suddenly realizing that there seemed to be a plethora of Amanda Q. types who were math failures. But since this was summer school, these Amanda Q’s were wearing unnervingly skimpy shorts, tight t-shirts, and some of them wore those old flip-flops featuring lovely pink-painted-nails. Funny how I can still picture some of those pink-painted-nails but I cannot remember the teacher’s name. But my 14-year-old mind was made up, I’d slog through math class till high school graduation, but I probably wouldn’t do very well, and I certainly wouldn’t like it. Of course, later I’d go on to become a humanities graduate.
I didn’t know it at the time, but my experience with “new math” was my first encounter with the modern day government-bureaucrat mindset. Maybe I couldn’t understand their “new math”, but I’d never needed help with “logic”. And that sure comes in handy now that Barack Obama is the president.
Mr. Obama has a “new math” that apparently only enlightened politicians seem to understand. It’s like I’m in eighth grade all over again. I just can’t grasp these concepts. None of it makes sense to me. Only this time, I don’t much care for the teacher. Because this time, the teacher doesn’t care if I don’t get it.
This time, the teacher doesn’t want to convey information. He wants to keep me in the dark. This time, the teacher doesn’t want to make it easier for me. He wants to make things more difficult. This teacher doesn’t care to solve problems. He wants to prolong or create problems. This teacher doesn’t want to teach. He wants to rule.
Look at the numbers on the website below and still try to convince yourself that President Obama cares. The problem is, he’s not alone. Over the years many politicians of like mind have been trying to teach us that these figures will all balance out in the end, that deficits were unimportant, and shamefully many of us believed them.
Their “new math” may add up for the the progressive elitists, government unions, and society’s ever-growing pool of eager takers. How about you !!! Do you actually believe that spending money can save money? Do you really think stimulus creates jobs? Still believe Americans are under-taxed. Take a look at this site. It will tell you how much of the national debt is yours. Hope you’re feeling generous. How’s Obama’s “New Marxist Math” working out for you.

Go ahead. Pull up another window. Type it in. Then take a look at your future. If that doesn’t stir you up give it two days. Take another look. Compare the numbers .
